Summary
“How much do you know about elven physiology?”
The sudden matter-of-fact–ness takes Caleb off guard. Could this be going where he thinks it might be going? “Not very much.” Not nearly as much as he would like.
“Right.” Essek inhales, worrying a fang at his bottom lip. “Well, it is not dissimilar to human physiology — but there are differences.”
“Of course.” Caleb nods, ever the eager student. “Longevity being a key one.”
“Well, yes, there is that, but—”
“And pointy ears,” Caleb blurts out.
Essek gives him a long, hard look, part reproach, part… something else. “Not just pointy,” he finally says. “They are… rather sensitive, as well.”
---
Or: When the wizards meet up in Aeor, Essek is woefully underdressed for the weather. Out of concern for his Kryn-friend's extremities, Caleb offers to help, with unforeseen (horny) consequences.Bookmarked by BlueLanguage

Summary
Essek Thelyss is given his first set of lingerie by none other than Jester Lavorre, and finds a confidence in it that he has not had in a long time. Caleb loves it too, and after a heated evening in his office, he and Essek add to his collection with many nights in bed enjoying each other. Consent and kink negotiations are sexy, and Jester is definitely keeping their sex lives a secret.

Summary
Beau rolls her eyes. “Okay. To recap, you’re sending the Bright King—”
“Queen,” Caleb interrupts. “The Dynasty ambassadors state that their people prefer to retain the word in Common regardless of the gender of the actual monarch holding the title.”
“Queen,” Beau says, relenting. “Anyway. You’re sending a lock of hair as part of your marriage proposal to the Bright Queen?”
“The Dynasty does not do marriage. You know how it is,” Caleb says firmly. His cheeks are growing pink. “What I am offering is a long-term alliance between two nations.”
[In Blumenthal, to send a lock of hair is a gesture of devotion. In Rosohna, to receive a lock of hair is a declaration of war.]

Bookmarker's Notes
On sunnier days, they meander around the garden, and start to watch things grow. It feels so domestic it scares him. He doesn’t want it to end.
And somehow, thanks to whatever gods are paying attention, somehow it doesn’t.
Essek keeps showing up, and Caleb keeps letting him in. They cook together, or sometimes Caleb will already have prepared food he knows Essek likes. Often they pour over new research journals, or magical items Essek has sourced from his travels. Once (or twice - he cant quite remember), they drink too much and Caleb puts music on and they dance together until late into the night and Essek's legs ache something awful.

Summary
“My point is, I want you to be comfortable," Caleb says.
“I appreciate that.” Something tightens around Essek's eyes and mouth. “I have been so used to being alone for so long. Sharing a space, sharing my belongings—I am not quite accustomed to this just yet.”

Bookmarker's Notes
“Essek. I, for one, am delighted that you're so enthusiastic about keeping our home organized. You may have noticed such things are not my forte.” Caleb winks at him. “But I'm more than willing to be trained. By you.”
“Oh, I think you will find yourself kept by a firm hand,” Essek says dryly.
Caleb leans closer. “Just to be clear: I would like that very much.”
“Stop batting your eyelashes at me and finish your dinner, Widogast.”
“Or,” Caleb says, rising from his chair, “I could make a meal out of—”
Essek flicks his fingers. Without warning, Caleb finds himself dragged bodily back into his chair by the collar—he drops down heavily onto the seat with a surprised oof. A violet mage hand glows before his eyes for a moment before vanishing from sight. Caleb blinks, more than a little flustered.
“That is what you asked for, yes?” Essek says. He has already resumed eating. “The food is growing cold.”
Caleb swallows, trying to ignore the heat pooling in his stomach. He picks up his spoon obediently. “Yes, Lord Shadowhand, sir.”
..........
“Ja, it sparks joy,” Caleb says, bewildered. “It was a present from Luc, from when Yeza and Veth did their clay firing workshop at the summer camp two years ago.”
Essek's expression clears. “Ah, well. In that case, it may stay.”
“Alright,” Caleb says, uncomprehending, as Essek takes the plate and leaves him to his book once more.
It takes another few minutes of reading before the full import of Essek's words hits Caleb with the force of a brick wall.
“Essek, wait,” Caleb calls, entirely unheeding of the ink that spills all over the new carpet in his rush to get to the kitchen, “we didn’t say anything about throwing things out—”

Summary
Caleb shakes his head. “Don't sell yourself short, my friend. I look forward to your visits more than you know.”
“I share those sentiments,” Essek says. His heart is beating strangely, like a hummingbird's wings. Perhaps now, at long last, Caleb will finally say something.
But Caleb only smiles at him again, withdrawing into silence. A comfortable, sleepy silence, but silence all the same.
That will not do at all.

Summary
Essek extends a hand towards the base of Caleb’s neck. Then freezes, as if he doesn't quite dare to touch. His fingertips hover over Caleb’s throat, a breath away from the pale streak of a scar, the place where a Sourger’s shiv struck home and sprayed blood over the walls of the Dungeon of Penance.
‘I did this,’ Essek says. His voice is quiet enough to scrape in his throat. ‘I allowed this to happen.’
(In which Caleb and Essek confront demons - in more ways than one - and discuss forgiveness.)

Summary
In that moment when Caleb squeezed his arm, something electric punched through Essek’s veins, spreading out from the point of contact - and he wanted, so badly, to believe that some part of it was real.
Now, Caleb’s hand rests warm over his heart, and Essek thinks, numbly, that this is very real indeed.

Summary
'How do you give back to a man who – changes you? Who writes something new and different over the surface of who you are? Who gives you – ’
Essek stops. Because his voice is splintering, and because he could live a thousand lifetimes and never find words for what Caleb has done for him.
‘Hope? Well, you say thank you, for starters.’
(In which Caduceus and Essek discuss growth, and wanting things, and green beans. And Caleb.)

Bookmarker's Notes
Then again, how would that conversation go? Good morning, Caleb, I’m interested in your ambitions. You mentioned once that they were like my own, so if I’m being honest with myself – a skill I’m finally adding to my repertoire – this is a selfish attempt to cling to the idea that you and I are alike. But from a less selfish standpoint, I want to be of service to you. Because I need to give something in return for all you’ve given me. Because I miss our hours of shared study, and I miss your trust, I miss living in a world where you felt able to pull me into an embrace along with Nott after research well-done, and I miss –
Essek closes his eyes. So many things that he misses, and yet most of all he misses something that never even was.
Turns out it's hard to want things, even the people you love, when you feel like you're, uh. Not allowed to. And it looks like that's where you've ended up: wanting things, and feeling like it's selfish, like you shouldn't.
‘Now you’re trying to be better. And you think that means you can’t want, because your old self wanted things, and you don’t like the person you see when you look back. And maybe you still don't feel too different from that person. Maybe you’re not everything you want to be just yet. But these beans won’t be fully grown overnight, just because we watered them once.’

‘Essek.’ Jester draws out the second syllable, and the tension in the air dies down from boiling to on a low simmer. ‘Why do you keep calling her ‘the Umavi’? She’s your mom, right?’
Essek’s smile softens slightly, but it's still thin-lipped. Mirthless. ‘You will not be there to meet my mother, Jester. You will be there for a formal introduction to the head of Den Thelyss.’
(In which the Mighty Nein have dinner with Deirta Thelyss, and learn where the venom in Essek's veins came from.)

Choose to do something, Caleb said. Leave it better than it was before. And Essek imagines closing his hands over those scarred wrists and pleading, how?
He hovers a moment longer. Then he drifts into the kitchen.
This is ridiculous. This is pathetic. Caleb told him to do something, and he’s chosen baking.
