"Buck wasn’t aware that it was physically possible to feel the earth stop spinning, but as it turns out all it took was a single sentence from Eddie Diaz.
“A year ago, I wasn’t sure I was coming home” he’d said, so flippantly and so casually, as he jostled with Chris on his couch – eyes firmly locked on to the TV screen as they battled it out on some video game. Buck wasn’t sure which one, exactly. It wasn’t important. Nothing felt important anymore, suddenly.
And that was all it took, just like that Buck had felt his entire world tilt on its axis slightly."
OR
After Buck hears Eddie make a comment about not coming home from Texas, he starts to emotionally detach himself from Eddie to protect himself after he's forced to yet again confront his abandonment issues. He ends up baking, avoiding his feelings and confiding in Maddie who is quite frankly done with her brother and his gay situationship of 8 years. Oh, and Eddie Diaz gets very pouty about the whole thing, leading to a bizarre encounter with a bunch of rotting bananas. That will make sense by the end, I promise.

He was getting used to the idea when they crossed state lines into California around sunset—as he glanced over at his sleeping best friend and, despite all the cuts and bruises, despite the open-mouthed snoring, his only thought was about how beautiful Buck looked in the golden light—but sometime as they were passing by Joshua Tree he became so aware of all the thoughts he’d been repressing that he felt like he was going to vibrate out of his seat.
