She made a little humming noise. “I am afraid, Sir Knight, that this is one danger you cannot wave your sword at. There is no escaping my marriage.”
“Oh. That. Marriage is no danger.”
She gave him a look of such sharpness that he felt himself wither. “You are a man. You do not have the first idea of the dangers marriage entails for women.” Her chin trembled though she held it aloft. “And you are a Knight Protector — you are not permitted to marry until after I am wed.”

“What is it that you fear?” he asked.
She took a deep breath. “Cruelty. Neglect. Loneliness. A life spent in solitude and uselessness, my mind slowly disintegrating through lack of exertion. There is so much world out here, Colin, and I shall only ever see one tiny patch of it. I fear dying after a life only half-lived. I have dreams and ambitions and they shall never, ever be realised. So while I am able, I mean to live.”

It is not until he buckles her into the back seat of his car that she says anything. “You ot Eweeze,” she mumbles, pretty blue eyes blinking at him. “Coh-win.”
“Want to run that one by me again, kid?”
Kid. He’s called her that since she was five and he was ten. She grimaces and puts her fingers into her mouth, pulling out a wad of soaked, lightly bloody cotton wool. Colin holds out his palm and she drops it in.
“You’re not Eloise,” she repeats, and the words are still warped and fuzzy but much more understandable. Colin balls up the cotton wool and with nowhere else to put it, shoves it in his pocket. “You’re Colin.”
“Good looking out,” Colin says, walking around to the driver’s seat and climbing in. He finds her eyes in the rear view mirror. “I am, in fact, Colin. The same Colin who took you to the hospital this morning, remember?”
Penelope nods solemnly. “You look like Eloise, though,” she tells him. “Same hair. Bet it feels just like hers.”
Or - Penelope gets her wisdom teeth removed and Colin offers to take care of her!
