Crowley has everything just the way he likes it: a blackout-curtained tattoo studio, a deeply mistrustful ex-street cat named Bowie, and a permanent scowl for the rest of the street. He didn’t claw his way into stability just to start chatting with the locals. Especially not the ones with posh accents and fluffy cats.Aziraphale Fell has just moved into the flat above his dream bookshop—funded by a modest bit of family money, a great deal of optimism, and accompanied by Jane, his snow-white, velvet-pawed companion. The shop isn’t open yet, but he’s already noticed the tattoo artist across the road, all dark sunglasses and defensive posture.
They have nothing in common. And no intention of really speaking to each other.
Until the night Bowie is hit by a car.
Crowley, panicked and barefoot, ends up banging on Aziraphale’s door in search of a pet carrier—and somehow finds himself in the passenger seat of a vintage yellow car, white-knuckled and terrified, while Aziraphale drives them both across town to the emergency vet.

Once outside, Crowley was expecting the bat to simply take off, but it watched him for a long moment instead, as if trying to memorize his face. Crowley’s stomach squirmed a little at the scrutiny.
“You can come back any time,” he blurted out. “Y’know. For more strawberries. Or whatever. My treat.”
He wasn’t expecting a response. It was a bat, for Someone’s sake. But the little beast tilted its head down, a soft brush of its funny-shaped nose against the palm of Crowley’s hand, before taking to flight, pale wings flapping madly as it disappeared into the night sky.
