Tommy had taken to his role as Wilbur's caregiver more easily than expected, sliding into the dynamic as if he'd been born for it. He wasn't particularly ashamed of it either, mostly feeling pride at his knack for parenting. Even Wilbur, bundle of anxieties and shame that he was, had made significant headway in accepting himself, almost to the point of being ready to tell people.

There is one reason he might not want to be seen with him, though, one that makes Tommy feel sick and weirdly lightheaded.
If Wilbur’s trying to break up with him, then being seen together would make it more difficult. People would ask questions, and it could give him false hope. Dread pools in his stomach, and his limbs feel like lead. Everything clicks together.
Well, except for the water.
