“Oh.” Lucy said, “Oh, that’s fine– great! Awesome, actually. I’m so happy for you.”
“Thanks,” Lockwood said, still staring down at his palm. “I’m looking forward to it.”
It was a testament to how smitten he was, Lucy assumed, that he didn’t notice how off-kilter her expression was. The flicker of shock that had flashed across her face before her smiling congratulations would have been obvious even to a visitor.

Or, Lockwood and Lucy are both idiots who need a giant billboard to tell them that their feelings may be reciprocated.

    Summary

The house was a towering, Victorian home, hiding amid a copse of trees at the end of a long, winding lane through the countryside. When the car rolled around the final curve in the road and the darkened edge of the house oozed suddenly into view, the sight of it struck them all quiet in the middle of their planning.

Lucy felt a cold anticipation spill through her; not something drawn from her senses, but something wholly internal.

“It certainly looks the part,” Lockwood said after they had hauled their things out of the car and parted ways with the driver. The house loomed in front of them. It was a combination of rust-coloured brick and dark wooden wainscotting, the kind that is going for a rich, burgundy brown and ends up reading closer to dried blood.

“Personally, I think it’s a bit cliche when haunted houses look haunted,” George said. “Would it kill them to slap some colour on it?”

“Maybe that’s how the original owner died, the one who actually lived here,” Lucy jumped in. “Livening up the paint job.”

    Summary

The final showdown at Fittes House doesn't go quite as planned. Lucy is taken captive and the others are scattered to the wind, all while Penelope concocts her scheme to get the greatest Listener of a generation on her side. Lucy resists - of course she does - so Penelope is forced to do the unthinkable: ensure Lucy can't remember anything before her life as an Official Fittes Asset. Exhausted, overworked, and lonely, Lucy is given the perfect opportunity to escape her bleak existence by the arrival of a tall, dark, and handsome stranger who smuggles her to freedom. That would be perfectly fine and dandy, except the stranger claims to know who she was before her life at Fittes, and insists they were once close teammates. Without her memory, and amongst perfect strangers, Lucy must work to dismantle the Fittes empire once and for all, and maybe gain back a little of herself in the process.

    Summary

“Is it so awful to be around me that you’d rather die in the snowstorm?”
Lockwood intends it as a joke, he even attempts to smile, but it’s the question that has remained in the back of his mind for a month. Was it because of him?
Her eyes narrow and she swallows. “That’s not – of course not. I just need to get back to my flat. But yes, alright. Yes, I will stay.”
