“So you are drinking again.” Katniss stated flatly.
His silence acted as confirmation enough.
“Is this because of what happened to Effie?” she pushed.
Still he had nothing to say. He hoped the subject would be dropped if he just kept on walking and refused to acknowledge her.
“If she were here, she would be disappointed to know–”
He stopped dead in his tracks, unable to hold his tongue any longer.
“Well that’s the goddamn point! She’s not here!” he shouted.
His hands clenched into fists so tight he was sure blood had been drawn.
“She should be nagging me to clean the house, or to paint the bedroom her favorite shade of purple, or make room in my closet for all of her ridiculous outfits!”
He looked up for a moment at the clouds overhead, still grey, still threatening to pour down upon them at any moment without mercy.
“It’s supposed to be her job to go out in the rain and talk about boy problems. She should be here. She should have survived, not me! But just like every woman I ever..."
He hesitated.
"Like every woman I ever loved, she had to go and die. So yeah I reached for the bottle again… I let everyone down… again.."

For once in her life, he needs her to listen to him.
"You slip through the wall, and you get Ellie the fuck out of here. I will find you after." Her lip curls into a snarl, fury and irritation chafing her expression. He knows that she's pissed, but they ain't smuggling partners on a run gone sideways right now.
They're parents.
"We don't get to leave, Joel. That was the fucking deal." And it still is. He's trying to get them all out alive.
That means she needs to run, and he needs to handle the fucking hunters opening fire in the direction of their family.
"I ain't leavin' and neither are you; this is just temporary." Hoping like hell he ain't lying to her, he tightens the strap of Ellie's sling and insures she's pressed tight against Tess.
He'll get back to them, and he'll mow down every fucker that tries to get in his way.

"I'm scared all the fucking time now", Joel says, rubs his hands over his face, his tired eyes. "I wasn't scared like this since-"
Since her, he doesn't say. Doesn't need to.
It's so much better- so much worse, when you find something to live for. When you got something to lose.

Or, the one where Ellie confronts Joel about the Lie, and he ends up revealing more than he meant to, but maybe that's just what they both needed.
