“This is a joke, right?” Eddie asks, looking from Buck to Kelly to Darcy and back. “You got a friend to come in and prank us so they’d stop taking out bets on your love life. Very funny.”
“Uh, no.” Buck shifts uncomfortably from one foot to the other and hitches Darcy higher on his hip. Fortunately she seems unconcerned by the grown up conversation, distracted by tracing the lines of the tattoo peeking above the stretched out collar of his workout shirt. “This is my husband, Kelly, and our daughter Darcy. Can you say hi, Dar?”
Darcy blinks up at him with big blue eyes that are the exact same shade as Kelly’s, her little fingers pausing on the first number of Shay’s badge number where it’s stamped on his collarbone, and then turns a charming smile on the gathered crowd. The girl hasn’t yet learned the meaning of the word shy and Buck hopes she never will. “Hi! Can I slide down the fire pole?”

Chicago had too many ghosts in it. When Buck and Kelly took their daughter to Los Angeles to start over away from all those painful memories, Buck wasn't ready to mix his work and home life quite so thoroughly again. So he keeps them separate - for a little too long.
