“Why?”
“Is it not obvious? I want answers. Closure.”
Vi chews on an answer; a pendulum begins to swing. “And what do I get out of this?”
Caitlyn’s answer this time is much more hesitant, much quieter, the seconds dragging with nails digging into the dirt. And when she finally speaks, her words are fragile whispers that slip over the incline of her lips. Brittle enough to snap in half. “Answers. Closure.”

Tilda doesn't think she's ever heard or seen Elisabet laugh like this before. Not in public, not like this—loud and unflattering and beautiful and only ever around her. The thought keeps her warmer than the liquor does. The ice in their drinks clink cold and solid, and they lean closer and closer into each other's space while coupled glasses empty. Elbows atop a table, hearts skipping, a strange timidness making them abuzz with youth, flirty banter drawing smiles, a sense of newness turning her into a giggling mess—giggling as if they were teenagers, as if they weren't in their thirties.

Like pretty much everyone in Halcyon, Hawthorne wore a strip of cloth over her left wrist. It probably covered a name. Or not just a name, but the name -- the name of the soulmate Hawthorne was destined to meet in accordance with the Plan. Or the Equation. Or whatever. Explanations varied.
Nearly everyone had a name there. It showed up sometime when you were a teenager, and at least in Byzantium it was a big deal. Sometimes a name didn't show up. Or didn't show up until you were older. The name on Ellie's wrist had shown up a month after she'd turned 14, around the same time she'd started showing "competencies" on the "medical studies track," according to her test scores. In turn her name had to be out there somewhere, on someone's wrist. Her real name.
