Summary
Mike feels—fuzzy, a little bit. Not from the wine, because he didn’t have much, but just from the day itself. From his realization. From the certainty that he can’t go back, after this. He’s let himself feel it. He’s let himself decide. From today on, there’ll just be the time before he knew he liked Will, and the time after.
Without really thinking about it, he swipes over to his messages. His and Will’s pathetic last conversation is still there, Will’s gracious apology and Mike’s fumbling acceptance. The screen blurs in front of his eyes; light and color and sound. He types:
Do you ever think about us?
He presses send.

He cannot imagine how this all feels for Will, to have the thing that has sunk him for over four years to be gone, or at least so far on the way out that it is impossible to come back.
They stand, opposite and distant, neither having the strength to move right now. Mike’s staring, and here he is crying, shaking with his tears because his best friend is free, because he is free and it is over.
