Her lungs inflated with a sharp gasp. And then she was falling, plummeting, trying to hold on to herself, to not lose control, but everything was crashing down on her at once, and she couldn’t help it, she couldn’t—
“Wens,” Enid barely murmured into her ear, and Wednesday burst, splintering into a thousand tiny shards.

Finally, Zoey blurted it out, voice soft but sharp:
“Have you ever thought of… something besides monogamy?”
Mira’s thumb stilled on the screen. She looked up, slow. “…What?”
Zoey’s hands twisted in her lap. “Like—not open relationships. Just… not just one person. Have you ever thought about being with more than one person and it still being okay?”
She wasn’t looking at Mira. Her voice was tight, like it hurt to speak. Mira watched her with a furrowed brow, still quiet.
“I feel so guilty all the time. Because I love you, Mira. I love you, and this doesn’t change that, but I see her and I want to make her smile and I want her to hold my hand and I think she’s beautiful and weird and sweet and I—”
She finally looked up, tears shining in her eyes.
“I think I ruined us. And I’m so sorry.”
Mira just stared at her. Wide-eyed. Silent.
Zoey’s heart dropped. “Say something.”
Mira exhaled like she’d been holding her breath for a month.
Then she visibly deflated—shoulders dropping, head tilting back against the wall—and let out a quiet, choked laugh.
“…Oh thank god.”

"Is everything okay?”
“Oh thank God,” Marcy breathes. Somewhere in the vicinity of the call she can hear what sounds like a struggle. Someone yells and another person screams in pain. “We, uh, we need you to come in. Like, as fast as you can.”
Anne blinks.
“Marcy, you know that I don’t do that,” she starts, “We’ve been over this. Your work stays at work and I’m not getting involved with it just because your boss thinks-”
Marcy growls in frustration and something behind her in the call shrieks. The sound is eerily familiar and the goosebumps running up Anne’s spine can’t seem to decide why.
“What the fuck is that?!”
“That!” Marcy growls, “Is why I need you here. Goddamnit, Anne, they found her!”
Anne is still lost.
“Found who?!”
“Sasha!”
____Of fantasy worlds you could fall into from your own, some are nicer than others. Even still, most of them aren't The Backrooms.
