Valyrian gods did not offer Aerys a living daughter, so the firstborn of Steffon Baratheon was undoubtedly considered as Prince Rhaegar's prospective bride. Roslyn was brought to Red Keep to be Queen Rhaella's ward, growing up with her cousin.
She thrived in the court and befriended with the dour, melancholic prince. Fearless, exuberant, and gregarious...she was everything he wasn't. So it surprised no one when he finally fell in love with her. Unfortunately, he was not the only one.
Or: A different bride should have solved all the problems, but chaos ensued in another way because of the king's madness.

At the ripe age of sixty-four, Saera Targaryen made her way back to Westeros to witness the coronation of her fifty-seven-year-old niece, Rhaenys, in 131 AC. It seemed that her father's chosen heir and his descendants had exterminated their family more efficient than the Doom of Valyria.
Or: Saera laughing at everyone and her father's stupid decision.
AU: Viserys payed the consequence of his decision. Rhaenys became the queen after the Dance.
(This is a crack fic. I just want to write Saera dancing over Jaehaerys' body and make him savor the irony).

"In the midst of her cries, she could see the servants looking at her as they passed, some with sadness, others more shocked at the scene than anything. She was able to hear one of the stableboys say to the other, not too loudly but loud enough that she managed to hear it, “She’s gone mad.” Aelora agreed. If she wasn’t mad already, the guilt of what she did would drive her to such a state soon enough."
Through the course of his reign, King Aerys I recognized a total of four heirs: his younger brother Rhaegel who died choking on a pie, then Rhaegel's son Aelor, who was accidentally killed by his twin sister-wife Aelora, who became the next heir, though mad with grief she would eventually kill herself, and lastly his youngest brother Maekar, who would eventually succeed him.
This AU explores a scenario where Aelora doesn't kill herself and outlives her uncle, becoming queen.

Summary
As they flew, Rhaenys watched her granddaughter. Her curls had been blown free from their pins, streaming in the wind, and she had raised a hand to idly trace the underside of a cloud. A sudden desperation seized her. If Corlys died, Baela would be one of the last two things binding her to this life.
Rhaenys shook her head, discarding the feeling, and settled in her saddle. There were three things that she had absolute faith in: Meleys, her husband, and that it would be Baela who would inherit the Driftwood Throne, even if it killed Rhaenys to put her there.
Rhaenys pushes for Baela's claim during the Driftmark succession crisis and finds herself sharing common ground with Alicent Hightower and her strange, half-Targaryen children. As war seizes the realm, Rhaenys, Baela, and Rhaena must navigate House Velaryon to safety, fighting alongside the people always believed to be their enemy.
