Summary
It’s a laughably obvious sentiment— anyone, quite literally anyone, could tell you that, even if they didn’t do it with words. The trappings of one’s home, the quality of the paint, the stains and patches that are so carefully hidden on clothes, all of it speaks to that gnawing, inescapable truth at the back of the mind: that you are only as good as what you seem to be.
Which is of course why, when the occasion comes around, Zapolyarny Palace spares no expense.
Or, Il Dottore's habit of sending Segments to events in his stead does not extend only to funerals.

Rho considers it, imagines a world where such a thing could feasibly happen without the false sky coming down on any of their heads— thawed suspension medium, a cavernous silence once governed by the hiss of a respirator, wires and tubes snarling into a noose, livor mortis creeping to the soles of his feet, detached electrodes floating gently past unseeing, furious eyes.
“He’s not dead,” Rho says, not without bitterness.
Or, the oldest and youngest Segments do chores no one else wants to.
