    Philemon’s breath hitched, he looked from the dying fire to Florian’s face, the soft curve of his jaw, and the patient way his unbandaged eye searched the other man’s. The alchemist felt that familiar, dangerous lightness in his chest, the one that had nothing to do with his potions. “Why do you stay?” the alchemist asked, almost a whisper. “Why do you keep coming? I am a man of many broken parts.”

    Florian reached out, his fingers finally making contact as he traced the edge of Philemon’s jaw, just above the beginning of the scarring hidden by his mask. His touch was deliberate, warm, and entirely too comfortable. “Because,” he murmured, his thumb brushing just below that single, golden eye, “I like the pieces you’ve chosen to keep.”

    The air in the workshop grew heavy, the tension between them shifting from the ghost of family politics to something much more visceral. Philemon’s pulse thudded under the merchant’s touch, and for the first time, the alchemist didn’t pull back. He leaned into it and breathed, his voice rough with a need he hadn’t admitted to himself, “You're a dangerous man, Brand.”
