Sure enough, the door creaks open as though Shi Mei is checking that Chu Wanning has actually gone to sleep as he promised. Without looking back at Shi Mei in the doorway, Chu Wanning says, “I told you to leave.”
The footsteps crossing the room halt, but don’t leave. Irritation growing in his already painful chest. Chu Wanning spins around to scold Shi Mei for not listening to his shizun. The command to leave immediately dies in his throat before a sound escapes his lips.
Mo Ran is standing there. Ghostly. Still covered in the blood of battle. Tears running down his face. His eyes wide and his mouth open as though in shock. In his hand he holds a single perfect haitang blossom that falls to the ground as he runs to the bed Chu Wanning sits on.

In the Heavenly Rift, Mo Ran dies on Chu Wanning’s back as he drags them up 3,799 steps. Seven days later Huaizui arrives and tells Chu Wanning he can save Mo Ran. Chu Wanning agrees to do anything to bring Mo Ran back. The problem is, Chu Wanning knows Mo Ran died hating him and won’t want to return for him.

Chu Wanning’s heart stills. He never even thought about reaching out to Huaizui. He so thoroughly cut him out of his life that he never considered it. He was part of a past Chu Wanning wanted to forget. Chu Wanning chokes on a few answers before he says, “You wouldn’t understand what it's like to have someone like your shizun betray yo–”
He’s just my Shizun, nothing more than that. Liking or not is irrelevant.
Chu Wanning, turn around! Look at me...are you really going to leave…
It’s nice not to hate you anymore.
All the memories of Mo Ran’s dislike, his hate, washes over Chu Wanning like a tidal wave. He doesn’t know what he did to hurt Mo Ran so badly that he actually hated him long before his death, but he knows that he knows he walked away as Mo Ran cried for him to stay. That he let Mo Ran die.
He did betray him. Perhaps worse than Huaizui betrayed Chu Wanning.
Chu Wanning’s hands retreat into his sleeves as he stands up to walk away from the table. He doesn’t know what to do upon this realization. So many of the cruel voices that swirl in his head have suddenly been confirmed in a single thought. He doesn’t know how to even look at Mo Ran.
The only thing he knows how to do is hide.
He feels his voice almost crack despite his best efforts as he says, “You can go now. You don’t need to return in the morning. Tell Madam Wang I will begin seclusion as she instructed. Tonight.”
He can hear the scrape of wood behind him as Mo Ran pushes his chair back. Chu Wanning tries to still the way his body is shaking at the shock of his realization.
This isn't who he wants to be. But it's who he is.
"Shizun…"
Chu Wanning doesn't move. He doesn't breath. Mo Ran takes a step closer. He closes his eyes and exhales deeply through his nose when he hears Mo Ran only a pace or two away.
"Shizun, can you look at me?"
Chu Wanning hesitates before turning his head. He doesn’t want to repeat the past.
Once Mo Ran knows Chu Wanning is looking, he starts to speak. "I don't blame you for dying. What I said right then, that was all wrong. I was confused. I didn't understand what was happening and I blamed you for it. You didn't betray me. You've never betrayed me!" Mo Ran's voice cracks on the last word. He looks as though he's carrying an immense weight on his shoulders, as though he's a man decades older than he is. One who has suffered immensely.
"And I'm sorry for what I said in the underworld. I thought that was what was bothering you all this time, that's what I meant when I asked the question. I thought that's why you wouldn't look at me or talk to me. I thought I said too much and you hate me. I just…
“I just don’t want you to hate me anymore.”
Chu Wanning remains silent. Mo Ran has that same trace of a desperate beast that his soft human soul carried.
Very slowly, Mo Ran reaches for Chu Wanning’s hand tucked into his long sleeve. He encases it in his warm palms. Very clearly, he says, "I don't hate you, Shizun. Thank you for bringing me back."
Chu Wanning manages to reply "I never hated you."
Mo Ran wipes his eyes. The top of Chu Wanning hand feels cold as he does so.
"I know."
Mo Ran leads Chu Wanning back to the table. Chu Wanning allows himself to be led. He does accept the candy Mo Ran offers, but just holds it tightly. His stomach is already roiling with anxiety from the night and he doesn't want it to ruin this sweet gift from Mo Ran, the closest he'll ever get to a real gift of affection.
They talk a little more until Mo Ran asks, "You're not really going into seclusion, are you?"
"I should." He doesn't want to. But Huaizui’s spiritual energy has not integrated into his system entirely. Without Mo Ran helping circulate it each day, seclusion is his only choice.
As though he'd read Chu Wanning’s thoughts, Mo Ran says "I can keep helping you, Shizun. And Uncle tasked us with helping Yuliang Village with their autumn harvest later this month to ease us back into the world again. If you go into seclusion, we won't be able to help them."
"...Okay."
Mo Ran beams and squeezes the hand still in his own.

This at least got a reaction. Chu Wanning frowned, affronted, crossing his arms in front of his bare chest. “I’m not your servant, Mo Ran.”
Mo Ran grinned. He was so easy to rile up. The delivery, a small fortune’s worth of assorted sex toys and bondage gear, was hopefully going to help him in that respect as well. “I know, I know, baobei. I’ll see you later at the party, okay?” He paused halfway out of the room to look back at Chu Wanning's cute, pissed off face, and then had to turn back, crawl up the bed and give Chu Wanning a forehead kiss and a gentle nipple tweak where the sheet he was holding up to his chest had slipped down.
“Be good!” Mo Ran shouted behind him as he left the room.
When Mo Ran leaves him unsatisfied, Chu Wanning turns to crime to take matters into his own hands.
