    Summary

Ah,” Silver breathes, eyes transfixed by the mesmerising pattern of the sea, swishing back and forth as though she were a graceful dancer. He turns away as he feels a hand come to rest on his arm, meeting his father’s concerned eyes. “Did it happen again?” At Lilia’s wordless nod, Silver stifles a heavy sigh. “I’m sorry, Father,” he murmurs, heat flustering his cheeks; he truly does feel ashamed. “How late must it be…? You should not have had to sacrifice your own sleep to stop me.”

“And let you walk into the ocean asleep?” Lilia retorts, a sudden fierceness seizing his words. Silver squirms as he feels a finger tap against his forehead; “What must be going on in that mind of yours to say such a thing? I am your father, Silver. What kind of a parent would I be to let my son go sleepwalking off the pier?”

    Summary

    Clang!

The sound of sword against sword reverberates through the air, accompanied by the haggard, weary sound of panting. Lilia narrows his eyes, his sword still outstretched, pressed against that of his opponent — his son, Silver, who is also his student.

Silver’s chest expands and contracts, lips parted as he sucks in another deep breath. The practice blade in his hand trembles before finally, he gives in. The sword drops to the ground below with a clatter.

“I yield,” Silver says, voice strained, dropping to his knees. He raises his arms, conceding in defeat.

But all Lilia can think, staring at his son before him, is that this is not good enough.

    Summary

They lay him in a bed of the softest quilt, head pressed against a featherdown pillow, silken sheets pulled up to cover his chest. There, Silver lays, eyes pressed shut, unmoving and still — if it were not for the gentle rise and fall of his chest, the barest of movements, he could have been mistaken for dead.

It is wretched, the way the room feels like a funeral. The room is like an explosion of flora — roses hued with the rays of the sun or painted the colour of the luminescent moon, orchids and hyacinths, blooming hydrangeas and sweet-smelling lilies. Condolences sent from all corners of the world, from the many, many people who have learnt of what Silver did, of how he saved them all.

It is Lilia who speaks first, voice cracking. “I hate those flowers,” he hisses, casting a deathly stare at a pot of lilies, alabaster petals swaying gently. Malleus knows why, innately; it is the reason that he detests them too, loathes what they symbolise — grief and mourning, departures and goodbyes.

This is not a goodbye for them, not yet.

Silver is not dead — not yet.

    Summary

He had awoken from his dreams some time ago — the specifics of why, he does not know. All Lilia had done was jolt awake in a sudden, frantic panic, chest heaving as he sat upright upon his bed, gloved hand clutching his chest as he struggled to wrest his breathing back under control. Memories of the dreams he’d gone through — lost in the throes of a younger time when he had been running wild as the feared general of Briar Valley, weapon in hand and soldiers by his side — had flashed through his mind, reminding him with a startling clarity of every wicked word he had ever said to his son, Silver.

And it had been in that striking moment, bile rising in his throat as Lilia recalled the flashes of hurt and misery on Silver’s face, that Lilia noticed him.

Silver, standing in front of his door, head lowered, a blade resting in his hand.

Silver, who dripped with armoured ink, the Phantom of a dress curling over him. Its sleeves wrapped around his steadfast shoulders. A puddle of blot was forming around his heeled boots.
