Old threats are rearing their heads, the world is on the brink of destruction, and Shadow's very being is becoming something he doesn't recognize. Yet all he can think about are questions that aren't even relevant to the rising threat. When had he stopped hating every appearance of royal blue or when that annoying voice called out his name? When did he start looking forward to the sparring, the races, the constant push and pull of their dynamic? When did he start appreciating that the hedgehog existed? Why did those feelings change to this disgusting content that Shadow didn't know what to name?

sonic would give anything just to drop all his stupid schoolwork and start running—anything to feel the wind in his fur, his feet pounding against the ground as he raced faster than the speed of sound. he didn’t need to pretend to care about numbers and formulas. nobody could catch him, not even a car, not even a plane. heck, he could probably outrun an army if he felt like it. he was special, right? faster than anyone, stronger than anyone. a prodigy. a force of nature.
so why the hell did he feel so damn miserable? he should’ve been happy, but all he ever did was run. all that speed, and where did it get him? nowhere. sure, he had his friends—tails, knuckles, amy—but they couldn’t keep up. no one could. no one ever could.
until now.
the new kid wasn’t supposed to matter. he was supposed to be just another student sonic would pass in the hallway without a second thought. but for some reason, sonic couldn’t stop thinking about him. about the way he moved, about the way he looked at sonic, unreadable and sharp, like he saw something no one else could. sonic wasn’t used to being matched. he wasn’t used to being caught. but now, for the first time, it felt like maybe—just maybe—he wasn’t the only one running.
