    In his hands, the bejewelled hairpin feels like a heavy weight. He steps forward and tries not to look too eager.

    “I’ve loved you for a long time.”

    He sticks out the hairpin awkwardly. It almost slips from his grip, but he manages to grasp it just in time.

    “Would you– would you do me the honour of becoming my wife?”

    Dan Heng looks down at his outstretched hand and groans.

    Dan Heng practices proposing to Stelle... and eventually ends up proposing for real.

    It’s the one he wears when he decides something he values isn't worth anything special. 

    He doesn’t withdraw from the nest. If anything, he becomes more intent on it. Another blanket is pulled closer. Another edge is tucked in with precise, almost reverent care. His movements are slow, deliberate, as if he’s trying to compensate for something — like if he builds it well enough, carefully enough, it’ll justify itself.

    And suddenly, it looks less like a joke.

    Stelle can't help the small, almost sad laugh that bubbles up her throat. “Y-Yeah… And if you even try to go back on it, I'll… I'll tape our hands together.”

    Dan Heng's chest rumbles with a quiet, exhausted laugh. His tail flicks lazily against her leg, like he's agreeing with her. "Tape our hands together," He repeats slowly, voice thick with amusement and something softer underneath.

    A pause. Then he tilts his head down to press a kiss to the tip of her nose before murmuring, "Do it then. I'm not against anything at this point.”

    Stelle froze. In fact, the entire party car seemed to stop, the air growing thick with expectation and denied realization, the words permeating every part of her brain. Even Sunday glanced over from where he sat further down the bar.

    A snap of an imaginary finger, and Stelle’s soul returned to her body.

    “I—I’m sorry, what?”

    (or, Dan Heng is in love with Stelle. Stelle might love him too. But she refuses to accept that it’s actually possible, and it’s only after she figures some things out first that she allows it to happen, and even finds the courage to confess her reciprocation.)
