Summary
Veronica is ready to make a new life for herself at Westerburg University. It's the top Parahuman research facility in the country and she's determined to make herself known. Despite her efforts to avoid it, she becomes embroiled in the chaotic cape scene of the city, with a particular clique of villains taking an interest in her abilities. “Do you know how awful it is to lose everything that makes you… you?” Mira’s voice began to crack. “I can’t taste anything, can’t feel anything. I can’t even tell how long it's been since I actually cared about you two, not like I did before.”
“Mira, I-” Rumi’s attempt to comfort Mira was quickly cut short.
“Every single day I had to watch little by little the love I had for you two fade away. No matter how badly I wanted to, I just… couldn’t.” As Mira continued, Zoey noticed that Mira’s eyes were watering, she was trying to force herself to cry, to feel anything at all. None of it worked. “It’s like screaming, unable to move, while someone – something – evil steers the wheel for you.”
A long pause. Zoey and Rumi couldn’t think of any words to comfort Mira. They would soon learn that they weren’t going to be able to find any words to comfort each other.
OR
Mira’s long, slow descent into becoming a vampire.

Finally, Zoey blurted it out, voice soft but sharp:
“Have you ever thought of… something besides monogamy?”
Mira’s thumb stilled on the screen. She looked up, slow. “…What?”
Zoey’s hands twisted in her lap. “Like—not open relationships. Just… not just one person. Have you ever thought about being with more than one person and it still being okay?”
She wasn’t looking at Mira. Her voice was tight, like it hurt to speak. Mira watched her with a furrowed brow, still quiet.
“I feel so guilty all the time. Because I love you, Mira. I love you, and this doesn’t change that, but I see her and I want to make her smile and I want her to hold my hand and I think she’s beautiful and weird and sweet and I—”
She finally looked up, tears shining in her eyes.
“I think I ruined us. And I’m so sorry.”
Mira just stared at her. Wide-eyed. Silent.
Zoey’s heart dropped. “Say something.”
Mira exhaled like she’d been holding her breath for a month.
Then she visibly deflated—shoulders dropping, head tilting back against the wall—and let out a quiet, choked laugh.
“…Oh thank god.”
