Zack managed to flip over, but lost grip of his sword in the process. “Damn it! Cloud, I need…” He tried to push the invisible enemy off him to no avail. Still, he kept trying to fight back, his arms trembling and his voice shaking with desperation. “Cloud!”
Shit. There was no way that wasn’t going to be playing on loop in his mind for the next ten months. What was wrong with him? Zack was fighting an imaginary enemy, but he was still in actual pain, it seemed, and here was Cloud finding some way to be aroused by it all. This was messed up. Everything about this–everything about him–was messed up, was totally wrong.

Beyond Birthday wouldn’t usually say he was surrounded by death, but that he knew it well. He knew it better than he knew almost anyone else; he knew it better than he knew himself. He sometimes found solace in its predictability, thinking of it as a safe constant. He either didn't see death as much to worry about, or didn't see those who would soon meet it as much to worry about.
But A was always an exception, in every sense, in every way.
