“You do realize this is unnecessary, right?” Kaveh asks with a tired sigh.

From where he’s sitting across from him on the floor, Alhaitham levels him with an unimpressed look. In his hand lies Kaveh’s wrist, limp and aching as Alhaitham rubs the anti-inflammatory gel over the swollen area.

“If it bothers you so much, you’re free to leave,” he says.

In which Alhaitham gives Kaveh a hand massage.

    Summary

It is not a curse, though many would say it behaves as one. A curse is something malicious, something ugly. Kaveh chose this. He did it with the recklessness and lack of foresight of a child--but he chose this. It is not a curse.

It is a blessing. He asked for this.

Kaveh loves and he suffers for it, more physically than one might expect.

    Summary

His glass of water clinks against the clay coaster he keeps on the side table, and red ink stares angrily up at him from the book resting on his knee:

‘Thoughts?’ he asks, like it’s out of innocent curiosity. Really, Al-Haitham? You want to know my thoughts?

Fine. You asked for it. Here’s a thought:

    Fuck you.

Al-Haitham feels his lips pull up into a smile.

In retrospect, starting a philosophical argument in the margins of an ancient poetry book might be one of the best ideas Al-Haitham has ever had.

    Summary

A loud Kaveh, sober or not, was not a Kaveh worth tying oneself into knots over. His passion, flamboyance, and odd touchiness were absolute. The quiet, however, was equivocal.
