    Summary

Recently Reigen noticed his usual spiels have been continuously losing their effect when it came to Serizawa. Working with someone that isn’t oblivious to his lies puts him on edge. He isn’t sure if his coworker is only days away from finding out, or worse, if he has already realized he is working for a fraud.

And if Serizawa knows he is being lied to, then why didn't he quit yet?

    Summary

Many passerines have what ornithologists call a “sensitive period” during the first few weeks of their life, where they are primed for vocal development and learn their own species song via observation of, most often, the father. If you didn’t care about the ethical concerns, you could kidnap and drop a hatchling in an echo chamber, feed it ground up worm pellets and clean up its excrement from routinely sterilized projections in the walls, build it a nest from PETE hair bristles and aluminum foil. With nothing to pluck its neurons beyond the sound of its own wails, it never learns to correctly sing. If it was lucky, it may attempt a delicate, babbling sub-song it picked up from its father, or even struggle through the plastic skeleton of an entire motif, but it would never sound 100% right. Not to its conspecific bird, and not to itself.

Serizawa struggles with the expectations surrounding being a “man” and an “adult” and all the baggage that comes from not being able to satisfy those expectations. Reigen shares those struggles, but via a separate journey.

"Any plans for where you’re going after you graduate?” Reigen asks, and it comes off as offhanded but Serizawa knows from the time he’s spent learning Reigen’s ticks and tells that the question must’ve been burning on the tip of his tongue for quite some time now. “Any jobs you’re looking to apply to? You’re talking to a business expert here, Serizawa. Humour me for a sec—I promise I’ll write you a damn good reference letter once you get that diploma.”

Reigen and Serizawa have a little talk about Serizawa's future.
