Summary
The textbook ghoul hunt goes south after Dean and Cas get into an argument about the last time Cas was captured on a hunt but hurt feelings are put aside when their roles are reversed and Dean is put in danger. A quiet car ride gives Sam insight into the two idiots in the Impala's backseat. Those two aren't as subtle as they think they are.

Summary
Dean comes back from a night of drinking and debauchery to find Castiel not quite himself. He admits to Dean that Heaven has sent every Angel into a breeding cycle to make more Angels to fill to void in Heaven in Chuck's absence, but Cas isn't allowed in Heaven and since he won't chance making a Nephilim with a human woman, they are out of options. When Cas worsens, Dean offers up one last suggestion. Himself. Cas can use him as a mate to survive this Heavenly breeding bullshit, but can Dean keep his feelings out of it when he believes Cas can't see him as anything but his best friend or is this going to ruin everything?

Cas has been human and out of the Empty for a few months, but for some reason, today Dean is acting odd. A lengthy grocery shopping trip, offering to let him drive the Impala, and walking out when someone flirts with him. Something's off but Cas couldn't imagine that they were going to a lot of trouble from him. His birthday wish leads to reconciled tension and much needed clarity between him and the one thing he wants but thinks he can't have.

“How the fuck do you know my name?” Dean hisses.
The man doesn’t look scared. He is watching Dean like there is nothing else worth watching, lips a little parted, eyes a little soft. And blue. Real blue, like the ocean on a postcard.
The ice spreading down Dean’s spine makes him shiver.
“I suppose you could say I’m your guardian angel,” the man murmurs. His breath fogs pale between them. All of him is unnaturally warm, like Dean’s touching somebody with the sun sewn up beneath their skin. “I have known you, Dean Winchester, for a very long time.”

Summary
A ghost hunt goes wrong, and Dean ends up fighting for his life in an icy river. A certain angel somehow knows he's in trouble and shows up to help, but doesn't have enough power left to warm up Dean. It's just a simple cold night in the woods, but things can go wrong fast at night in the woods, and soon Cas and Dean must each decide what they'll risk to save the other. And they just might end up so exhausted that they accidentally start talking.
Canon compliant; focuses on the Dean/Cas breakup of S15E03, but takes place 2 months later. It's a couple weeks after "Golden Time", S15E06; Eileen has just been brought back; Cas/Dean breakup was 2 mos ago; short FBI phone convo was a couple wks ago. Sam/Eileen implied gently in the background. Warning: NO SMUT and not a totally happy ending yet, but it ends hopefully.
(This fic will probably be rendered irrelevant by canon immediately, but I wanted to put a pin in the map right now, before the show ends, & think through my own take on the possible reasons for all the Dean/Castiel tension of the last two years. And see if I could make it all make sense.)
