Bucky stomps his way to a stop in front of Steve. Steve looks up at him and smiles. His flat glare is all Winter Soldier, chilling to the bone, but the restless clench of his fists is Bucky. So is the stubborn set to his jaw when he demands, “Let me scent you.”
Without waiting for an answer, he begins to strip off his gear and set it in orderly rows on the coffee table. Derringer, holster, SIG, holster, mag-pouch, IFAK, Skorpion, belt, vest —
Steve’s eyebrows steadily rise. Surely, he thinks, Bucky hadn’t brought all those grenades for him. Bucky’s glare turns murderous when he notes Steve’s bland amusement, but by the time he’s done, dressed down to a t-shirt and cargos, he still hasn’t moved from his expectant spot in front of him, so Steve gathers up his wits and says, “Uh, sure, Buck. If you want.”
And then, without any pomp or ceremony, he’s got a lap full of serum-enhanced super-soldier.
or: Bucky’s memory leads him astray sometimes, but it works out just fine in the end.

Summary
Bucky swirls chow mein around his fork and stares vaguely off into the middle distance. He can feel Steve staring at him. Steve knows something is up. And because he’s staring, he’s showing Bucky that he knows. So Bucky knows that Steve knows, and Steve wants him to know that he knows. But still, Steve sits, and he waits, and he eats like, seventy chicken balls. Steve’s good like that. He’s definitely a keeper.
“So. We’re together,” Bucky finally fires his opening salvo.
“Seems so,” Steve answers stoically.
“Probably going to keep, you know,” Bucky gestures vaguely between them with his fork, “doing this.”
“I mean. I’m reasonably amenable. Keen, even.”
“Good. Right.” Bucky has another mouthful, just so he can chew and think, but that means he runs out of excuses once he swallows, “I have family. That I don’t mind, necessarily, keeping secrets from...but it doesn’t feel sustainable as a long term plan.”
“Yeah. That’s very fair, I think.”
“Okay.”
“Okay.”
“Good...so what are we going to...do about it?”
Steve shrugs, “I don’t know, what do people usually, do? Lunch?”

“bucky,” steve breathed, his voice trembling, barely more than a whisper. his eyes were glassy with desperation, his body writhing against the sheets, slick with sweat. “please.”
bucky’s wolf roared inside him, clawing at his chest, and he knew — he knew — he couldn’t stand this any longer.
he gripped the windowsill so tightly his knuckles turned white, his breath ragged. he wanted to go to steve, to hold him and help him through it, but he couldn’t. not yet.
steve gasped again, his voice breaking as he whispered bucky’s name. the words hit bucky like a fist to the gut.
“bucky…”
and bucky knew, deep down, that the next time steve called for him, he wouldn’t be able to walk away.

Steve is still angry as fuck, so he doesn’t mince words. “Why won’t you look at me?” he demands, stepping forward, fists clenched. “Why won’t you talk to me? Why won’t you touch me?”
His voice almost breaks on the touch, and now his anger toward Bucky twists quickly into despair and self-hatred. “It’s because I’m a freak, isn’t it,” he says more softly. “I’m a huge, disgusting monster and you can’t even bear to look at me anymore.”
He sighs and drops his head, relaxing his hands. This is it, he thinks. This is the end of everything.
