Summary

Summary
A beat of silence passes. When Wriothesley looks up again, Neuvillette’s expression has noticeably relaxed. The barely-there hint of a smile looks beautiful in the dim light of his office.
“I am most grateful for your invitation, Your Grace, and I would happily accept,” he says.
Wriothesley had not expected that answer. He blinks. “Really?”
“Of course,” Neuvillette says, amusement creeping into his tone. “The event happens to fall during a lighter period of activity here at the Palais Mermonia. A happy coincidence. I can be free for the evening.”
The Fortress of Meropide comes together for a scrap-up celebration of White Day—a grander event than any they've hosted before. Wriothesley invites Neuvillette, and the night proceeds in a way that he is not at all expecting.

“Perhaps I simply find it unjust for credit to be given where it is not due.” Neuvillette murmured, raising his gaze to meet Wriothesley’s. “Perhaps I wish to give you credit for all you have accomplished. For all you are.” He felt pinned, like a butterfly, or a beetle to a specimen collector’s board. That gaze held him, as it always did. Measured him, looked into him as none other ever had. He always expected to be found wanting, but Neuvillette merely smiled obscurely, his eyes sliding away to stare at the Wingalet once more. It felt as if some great beast had passed him by, a leviathan who had already eaten his fill.
Wriothesley found, as ever, he would not mind being devoured.

Before and After the flood, Wriothesley's desires remained constant, even a near death experience, and the revelation it brought only spurred him onwards. He had loved Neuvillette for years, believing it unrequited, but dragons were patient creatures. -
