“I think you could kiss anyone here.”

Buck huffs, somehow pressing in even closer, the hand on Eddie’s shoulder slipping off and grasping his hip. “I think we both know if we both went up to someone wanting to kiss them, they’d pick you every time.”

Eddie closes his eyes, swallowing thickly. Buck’s cologne has mostly faded, but it’s still there, mixed with the smell of sweat and booze and the lingering scent of marijuana from the duo smoking by the entrance when they came in. It’s heady. He sways into Buck’s grip, only just managing to catch himself before he full forces swoons into him.

“They’d be wrong,” he whispers on a slow exhale.

Steve doesn’t want to ask this. He knows this is just a dream (or an upcoming nightmare). Something that’s made to feel real but isn’t. Still, he asks, “Are you actually alive?”

Eddie glances up at him. His big, brown eyes are shimmering with naive, joyful hope. “You tell me, big boy.”

    Summary

“You were drunk. I know it didn’t mean anything. Everything’s alright.”

Buck visibly winces. “That’s not — Eddie.”

There’s a suspended moment where Buck looks torn, standing on the edge of something, eyes fixed on the horizon to avoid looking at the drop, the precipitous canyon below. But then Buck, who can’t lie, who would tear his own chest open to a complete stranger on the street because the truth of him spills so loudly out of every jagged edge, sighs out:

    “It meant something.”

There’s a ringing sound somewhere in the distance, getting closer. “What are you…” Eddie trails off.

“I wasn’t — well, I was drunk. But that wasn’t what. Wasn’t why. Not entirely, or — god.” Buck shudders in a breath, steeling himself. “I have feelings for you.” He closes his eyes. “I’m so sorry.”

    ~

Buck confesses his feelings. Eddie’s straight. If he spends all his time thinking about Buck and looking at Buck and wanting to be around Buck, well, that’s just being a good friend, isn’t it? He’s being so normal about this, actually.

“He’s not my boyfriend! He’s Eddie! He’s a renter, and he’s straight,” Buck said proudly, as if that clarified anything.

The reporter hesitated. “So he was there because...?”

“He’s a paramedic,” Buck said, nodding solemnly. “Well, he used to be my firefighter partner, and now he’s someone else’s paramedic partner, which is fine, I guess. I miss him, though. He’s… he’s kind of my favorite person.”

The reporter blinked, caught somewhere between touched and deeply uncomfortable. “Well, it’s a good thing he was there!”

Buck brightened, grinning wide and loopy. “Yeah, isn’t he the best? Man, I love him. And not just in a straight renter way. In a bisexual homeowner way. I just bought a house, you know!”

“Maddie thinks you’re in love with me,” Eddie states, and Buck nods once. “Are you?” he repeats—slower now, not as if Buck is stupid—never, not once, has he ever made Buck feel stupid—but as if he’s… encouraging him to… slow down. To process.

“I-I love you,” is all Buck can stutter, along with as much of a shrug as he can manage in this position.

“And I love you,” Eddie confirms—still slow. “But that’s not what I asked you, either.”
