Wei Wuxian taps a finger to his chin, musing. “I’m just um- hm. I’m not sure how to tell if they’re cutsleeves too. But…” He shakes his head, a smile wiping away any trace of discouragement. “I mean, what does that matter, right? Anyone with eyes would want you for a lover, so it’s really more of a matter of who you like!”
“What.”
“At least that’s what I think anyways! I’ve only ever liked girls but even I would make an exception for you.”
“/What./”
Before Lan Wangji can choke out a response, Wei Wuxian is grabbing his wrist. “Come on come on come on, let’s go find your true love!”

“Nie Huaisang?” he demands, stumbling down the dirt path towards him. “What- are you the one who took down my wards?!”
He looks—awful. His eyes are sunken, his cheeks sallow. The robes he is wearing are nothing like the luxurious fabric he used to wear when he was still Yunmeng Jiang’s first disciple. Instead they are thread beard and worn, from a coarse fabric that looks irritating to the skin. There is a shakiness to his gait that Nie Huaisang has never seen from his friend, who always walked with such a presence as if to defy a world that has sentenced him to death.
“Of course it was me!” he scolds. “You really should take better care and hide your talismans.”
Wei Wuxian, rudely enough, ignores his (useful!) advice and instead looks at him like he’s mad. “What are you doing here?”
“Betraying the gentry and siding with evil, duh,” Huaisang rolls his eyes. “Now, will you let me in? I’m hungry.”

Summary
At fifteen, during summer camp in Cloud Recesses, Wei Wuxian invents a bunch of talismans when bored or prompted by Nie Husaisang. Thinking it awfully funny, he creates a throwaway account at a professional cultivation research/purchase network and uploads them for sale for a modest fee. Then, he forgets about the whole thing.
Years later, the mysterious Yiling Patriarch is known in all Jianghu as an elusive genius cultivator who revolutionised his field.
Those two statements might or might not be related.In other words: three different ways in which Wei Wuxian finds out he is filthy rich and academically acclaimed. That’s it. That’s the story.
