The Long Defeat by Double_sharp
Fandoms: The Silmarillion and other histories of Middle-Earth - J. R. R. Tolkien

Summary
The Silmarillion, as told by Caranthir's wife in her memoirs.
Needless to say, she is extremely biased. On the other hand, so is Pengolodh - just in the other direction...

Why I Love Telerin Celeborn by Double_sharp
Fandoms: The Silmarillion and other histories of Middle-Earth - J. R. R. Tolkien

Summary
The title. But I can't resist tangents, so everyone in the tags is also discussed to explain why I like it that way. Considering the excursus on Finrod and Galadriel's actions in the First Age, perhaps this is the spiritual successor to my essay on Angrod and Aegnor.
Also treated is Celebrimbor, because one of his origin stories relates to the matter of Telerin Celeborn. Thus I also ended up writing an excursus on Curufin.
Also including an appendix (chapter 2) on a bit of fridge horror regarding the Ban on Galadriel.

Summary
Why, despite being generally not too enthusiastic about the Valar, I still really like Melian.

Fëanorian Angrod and Aegnor: A History by Double_sharp
Fandoms: The Silmarillion and other histories of Middle-Earth - J. R. R. Tolkien

Summary
How the younger sons of Finarfin entered the mythology as Fëanorians, and that alignment (distinguishing them from Finrod) seemed a bit hard to shake off.
Including a brief tangent on why I am attracted to the headcanon of Gil-galad as son of Finrod Felagund. :)
(Now also updated with a second chapter, pointing to some potential evidence from the Athrabeth, as well as regarding Angrod's granddaughter Finduilas. And yet a third chapter about the Bëorians.)

Gildor, Voronwë, and My Lalwen Headcanon by Double_sharp
Fandoms: The Silmarillion and other histories of Middle-Earth - J. R. R. Tolkien

Summary
I somehow felt the need to try to make Voronwë literally "of the House of Fingolfin" when I don't feel the same urge for Gildor Inglorion. In other words - attempting to make Aranwë be Argon. (He still dies! But that doesn't mean he can't meet a daughter of Círdan in the Lammoth beforehand!)
I no longer believe it's necessary (because it seems likely that at the time Voronwë "of the House of Fingolfin" was written, JRRT probably no longer thought such statements had to be literal), but I still think it was an interesting exercise to try.
Also including my Lalwen headcanon. Also countercanonical, but I find it fun.

The North Sindar and My Headcanon of Caranthir's Wife by Double_sharp

Summary
I think the title says it all. With thanks to Esmeraude11 for much Middle-earth discussion.
(Regarding the second tag - it's explained at the end.)

Concerning Amras and Nimloth by Double_sharp
Fandoms: The Silmarillion and other histories of Middle-Earth - J. R. R. Tolkien
08 Apr 2025
Tags
Summary
My attempt to rationalise how the Fëanorians mix with Green-elves, also noting how Amras seems quite unusual for a Fëanorian, and Nimloth seems quite unusual for a Iathrim Sinda. In some post-LOTR writing she seems to be culturally a Green-elf.
Sorry that this is so long. The matter of the Green-elves is just really tangled.
(Now also briefly mentioning the situation under Oropher and Thranduil!)

Fëanorian Hair Colours, Part-Telerin Míriel, and the Kingship of the Noldor by Double_sharp
Fandoms: The Silmarillion and other histories of Middle-Earth - J. R. R. Tolkien

Summary
The title, pretty much. Well, in particular I headcanon a Míriel who's outright closely related (perhaps a first or second cousin) to Olwë - which makes the Kinslaying quite literal. :(
And also, since it grew out of analysing the Míriel story - why I like Fëanor and Finarfin a lot more than Fingolfin. (And also why I'm not too impressed by Indis in the last version of the Míriel story.)

On Eldarin Scientific Knowledge by Double_sharp
Fandoms: The Silmarillion and other histories of Middle-Earth - J. R. R. Tolkien

Tags
Summary
Pretty much the title, plus my attempt to work out why the Elves, given what they canonically know, don't nuke Angband. And also my attempt to explain the technology level of the Shire through surviving Fëanorians.
I originally posted this on Spacebattles as an informational sidenote to my fic The Long Defeat, but here it is expanded briefly.

The Fates of the Half-Elven by Double_sharp
Fandoms: The Silmarillion and other histories of Middle-Earth - J. R. R. Tolkien
30 Mar 2025
Tags
Summary
An analysis and headcanon on the choices of the Half-elven. Including why I'm convinced based on the texts that all of Elrond's children chose mortality, and that Dior and his sons were mortal and had no choice. :(
But also that Elros' children had the choice! And my headcanon on that! And a whole lot of Nimloth and Elwing meta, based on the HoME XI "Tale of Years" where Nimloth doesn't die! :D
Thank you as always to Esmeraude11 for much Middle-earth discussion. :)

An Attempt to Rationalise Aredhel's Story by Double_sharp
Fandoms: The Silmarillion and other histories of Middle-Earth - J. R. R. Tolkien
30 Mar 2025
Tags
Summary
My attempt at reconciling all the contradictory statements (and how contradictory they are) regarding Aredhel's story. A massive thank you to Esmeraude11 for much Middle-earth discussion, and suggesting Celegorm/Aredhel when I was working on my gap-filling.
NB: Eöl tends to upset me to write about. :(

My Completely Contrarian Take on Elrond and Elros by Double_sharp

Summary
Or why, despite the published Silmarillion, I wonder if in the late period JRRT may have considered the idea that Elrond and Elros were never raised by Fëanorians.
