Summary
He gathers up the ropes and begins to haul the nets into the skiff. The creature is heavy, and more than once, Ajax nearly drops it back into the sea. After several minutes of pulling and resting, he manages to drag it into the skiff, soaking the wood through. The creature twitches, its body undulating, and Ajax realizes with a jolt of alarm that there is human flesh in the midst of it. He rushes forward, peeling back the nets and then prying apart the bloodied coils of its tail to uncover a man’s torso. He lowers his eyes, expecting to encounter the horror of dismemberment, before bursting into sudden, loose laughter. The man’s torso ends not in gory separation but in the beginning of the serpent.
The creature isn’t a sea snake; it’s a merman.
