The face in the dirt was his own.
It was older, the jawline sharper and covered in a thick layer of stubble and gore. There was a jagged scar running through one eyebrow that Mark didn't have, and the sheer size of the man—the breadth of his shoulders and the thickness of his arms—made the seventeen-year-old Mark feel like a twig in comparison.
"Dad..." Mark’s voice was barely a breath. "That’s... that’s me. How is that me?"
Nolan didn't answer. He stood at the edge of the pit, looking down at the broken, older version of his son. His expression was unreadable, a mask of stone, but his hands were clenched so tightly at his sides that the air around his fists began to ripple.
He didn't look like a worried father. He looked like a man who had just seen a ghost that shouldn't exist.
