    Summary

    There was a windmill.

It stood outside of town, above the treeline and on a hill. The white stones were gray and mossy, the black roofing tile bleached by the sun, and the metal far rusted.

No one knew what to do with it, leaving its rotting corpse there for nothing and no one. It spun weakly on windy days, its arms creaking and whining from old age.
Cecilia never visited the windmill, never saw the purpose. It was an old thing that needed to be replaced. An eyesore and annoying to hear as she walked the dirt road on the edge of town to her home. She didn't like how it spun, slow and broken, like someone dragging themselves by the nails. So she never went to that hill. She never went to the windmill.

Until the day she had to.

    Summary

"Professor?” Edelgard is flushed as you pull away, nearly as red as her armor that lies discarded on the floor, and her eyes gaze up at you, heavy-lidded and hazy. “Are you all right?”

“I don’t think so,” you reply, calmly. “I think I might be having a heart attack.”

In the flurry of panic that follows for the next several minutes, you learn three things: 1. Small as she is, Edelgard is apparently strong enough to throw you over her shoulder and sprint to the medical wing within seconds, 2. Having Physic cast on you when you’re not actually dying makes you feel very queasy, and 3. You weren't having a heart attack, you were just stupidly in love.

    Or:

Byleth isn’t used to having a heartbeat. Especially one that behaves so erratically whenever Edelgard is nearby.

    Summary

Well— technically, they’re already engaged, she guesses. But the engagement party wasn’t exactly official. It was just five seven year olds in the playground, with a cake made out of damp second-layer sand lovingly clumped together and rings woven out of dandelions with stems that were slightly sticky from all the bending and squeezing. That’s the thing about childhood promises— they’re so warm with the sweetness of hazy remembrance that they taste just like dreams. They have the same ephemeral verisimilitude as well as the plausible deniability that comes with it.

So, yeah, they’re not officially dating— yet. It’s really just a formality at this point. They’re soulmates, after all— they probably did something real nice in their past life, so this time around they get to meet early and have a lifelong fairy tale romance.

“I think… it’s only getting weird ‘cause we keep lingering. We’re just like, little by little, in tiny increments or whatever.”

    “Sure, okay.”

“So you know what I think?” Gray rolls over close to him so that he can hear him better over the music. He pushes a hand through Tobin’s hair, whispering against his ear, “I think we should just make it all-the-way weird.”
