Dying didn't hurt you, not as much as you expected. You'd killed plenty, and were prepared for it.
What took you by surprise was, after you opened your eyes, you were in unfamiliar territory. There were so many questions, so many differences. The only things that were the same was the shake in your hands, and the lack of words on your tongue. The crippling anxiety eating away at your sanity.
After some time, trying to find your bearings you realize if you don't figure out something fast, you're going to starve or succumb to the elements. The circus in town may be your only option. You heard there was an opening to feed the animals?

You've been running for as long as you can remember, both in the literal and metaphorical sense. After five centuries spent wandering aimlessly in a world where every odd is stacked against you, solitude is all you've come to know.
Because at the end of the day, no matter how hard you try to blend in with humanity, you're still the only remaining member of your kind.
Then the circus comes to town.
Or: Reader is a scrappy monster with severe trust issues and an inability to socialise. Pierrot finds this cute and decides to keep them in the circus, much to the chagrin of several individuals involved (Reader included). Shenanigans ensue.

Summary
Humans, at one point, reigned above all other forms of life. They were at the top of the food chain, at the height of discovery and of intelligence. For thousands of years, that was the known truth.
Nothing could challenge them, nothing could destroy them, nothing could take a place above them and rule over them.
But yet, the world has been taken over.
Now, many would hear that and assume one of two things - aliens invaded and took over, or the human-made creation of artificial intelligence has rebelled and taken charge.
The year of 2087 was the Year of the Fae.
Fairies.
Fucking. Fairies.
Now, the fae are amused by humans. Amused to the point where they take them in as pets. There are shelters dedicated to capturing humans so that the fae folk can adopt them like dogs.
You were a stray.
But now, here you are, with two prissy fae fawning over you after they picked you out from the shelter that you ended up in, and by everything holy, you are Not Having It.
