It was midnight in California when Iwaizumi was dragged abruptly from his sleep by the insistent blaring of his phone.
There were only two people who could override the do not disturb setting on his phone, and neither of them had ever done so without good reason. That meant he was immediately wide awake. Barely a glance was spared at the display before he snatched it off his bedside table and answered the call.

Once again, Hajime’s eyes find Tooru’s. Tooru can only shrug, because he’s sure as hell not understanding anything that’s going on, and anything that’ll get Hajime to speak gets a go-ahead.
Only then does the slightly tense set of Hajime’s shoulders relax, and Tooru’s just about to relax back into the couch cushion himself when Hajime says casually—

There’s a familiar ache in his throat and he attempts to swallow around the tightness that appears to have settled there. As he inhales deeply, Hajime’s fingers brush against his jaw; warmth blooming beneath his fingertips.
