Summary
Dream knows this song. It is a popular one in this region (this sun-drenched corner of the world that Dream will ever after hold in especial regard; the home of his then-wife and child, where their footprints will leave the deepest marks) and after a sweat-soaked day of rowing, sailors’ dreams echo with the melody.
Dream’s baritone, so seldom used, blends with Calliope’s rich alto until they reach the end of the verse. Then Calliope motions Dream to a halt.
“If I sing the verse one line at a time, will you be able to sing each one back to me?” asks Dream. Orpheus nods. His face sharpens with focus, and it makes him look ephemerally, inexplicably older than his years. A strange pain strikes Dream’s heart like a flint. No, my son. Stay with me a little longer yet.
