Summary
“Edwin,” Crystal says. “You told me once not to treat you like a little fucking baby.”
“I do not believe those were my exact words,” Edwin says.
“Nuance,” she says, and then pulls a piece of paper from her back pocket and smacks it onto the desk. It is an article from a news webbed site, the headline reads: 100-YEAR-OLD MYSTERY SOLVED? BONES FOUND IN ATTIC ON ST. HILARION’S SCHOOL GROUNDS.
“What the actual fuck,” says Charles.
Or, when it comes to Edwin’s afterlife—well, how would Charles put it?—The hits just keep fucking coming.

Summary
Light flares up from the book, white and blinding. When she blinks away the spots from her vision the room is gone. The book is gone.
Dim green light casts a sickly pall down a long, decrepit looking hallway. She takes a breath and nearly chokes on the smell of dust and rot and something else, sharp and unnatural, like ozone. The light doesn’t seem to be coming from anywhere in particular. It gives the place an eerie unreality. It makes her skin crawl.

Summary
Everyone always assumes that Edwin is older. He wears a suit, he stands with his hands clasped behind the world’s straightest back, and he speaks with the vocabulary of a sixty year old scholar.
Edwin Payne is the definition of sensible maturity.
Right?
—
Crystal is in for a shock when she asks why Charles and Edwin don’t try to find more similarly aged friends to hang out with. Edwin should be going out to book clubs or whatever it is old people do. She learned there was a ghost meet up for a Saturday kick about, exclusively for ghost kids, last week after the boys had had to sort out a bunch of older ghosts that decided the rest of the week wasn’t enough for them but that Charles had never gone as a social call.So why does Charles sit around the office pestering Edwin about going to the park and learning to box when they could be busy doing their own things?

He did not say no.
Edwin cannot stress that fact enough: He did not say no.
When the Cat King… importuned him. When he made his offer. When he made it clear that his interest in the Edwin was carnal, and singular, and predicated on an exchange, Edwin’s freedom for his virginity, Edwin could have said no.
But he did not.

Summary
Alexander Payne had few personal items with him in the trenches. A wooden carved cross his father had gifted him years ago, on the day he first left for St. Hilarion's. Flowers he pressed carefully between pieces of paper, waiting for them to dry so he could send them home to Anna, his bride-to-be. A few assorted letters from friends. A picture of him and his parents, as stiff and lifeless as they always seemed to be. Most precious to him, however, was the singular photograph of his younger brother Edwin and the treasured few letters the younger boy had sent. These were stored more carefully, at the top of the tin where they were less likely to be crushed.
or
Alexander Payne died during World War 1, in November 1915. He has spent the last 110 years confined to the battlefield where he died and the small town nearby, oblivious to the fact that his younger brother Edwin died merely a year after he had. When Alexander learns about the Dead Boy Detective Agency, he simply hopes he can find a way to break whatever tie is keeping him here, and instead comes face to face with Edwin for the first time in over a century

Summary
The night after he adds a second bullet to his revolver, he meets Sherlock Holmes.
John's heart is wrenched from his chest with cold, plying words. His body is laid bare, more naked than he was in the heat of the warmest Afghan nights. He feels wrung and laid out to die in a sandy ditch, the bullet wound flayed open under icy-blue eyes.
“Dying to your own hand would be incredibly stupid, Watson,” Sherlock says, “If you’re going to die, let your heart do the killing.”
or; John Watson's heart has never been his own; he’s given pieces of it to everyone, but none more than Sherlock Holmes—and he buries him with it.
