“James would have broken into Azkaban himself,” Sirius whispered and Harry’s gaze snapped to his Godfather’s. There was a mess of emotions in those eyes but there was also a tremulous smile pulling at his lips. “He would have stormed the prison while Lily raised hell at the Ministry. They wouldn’t have stopped until someone showed them the memory of the trial, until they’d heard it from my own lips.” He took in a shaky breath and Harry felt something loosen in his chest at the certainty in Sirius’ voice.

Instead he was chasing his own tail more than anything, going 'round in circles and never finding what should have been a goddamn two-by-four in a pile of sand. It left him frustrated and half-feral, always a hairs-breadth from losing what had once been impeccable control.
