"I help you." She put the pressure on his wound, slowing the bleed. At least the voice involuntarily escaped Peter's mouth sounded sincere. At least it wasn't another trick.

So, it's no wonder that Ranpo with his mind worn down by his fever silps up and fails to see the difference.
To him there is no difference. Fukuzawa has always been by his side doing all of those things. Still, his slip of tongue is beyond embarrassing. Even if there's nobody around expect the two of them to witness it.
