“Lord Helion,” Eris replied crisply. The infant in his arms let out another small whine and wriggled. “Congratulations are in order.”
Helion’s brow furrowed. Eris wasn’t implying-
“Your affair with my mother bore fruit,” Eris said bluntly, lacking much of the courtly manners he usually maintained. “We cannot keep him safe at the Forest House. Father has been suspicious for some time and… we fear what my father will do to him, if he ever receives proof of his parentage, which he’s sure to get with him in the same house. We can’t guarantee what his powers will be, or who he will resemble in time.”
Eris looked down at his brother, stroking his tiny red head with his thumb. His tone softened as he gazed at the tiny babe in his arms. “Mother has already named him Lucien. I know it would mean a lot to her if you would keep his name the same. She sent you a letter explaining everything,” he nodded at the low table in the middle of the arrangement of chairs, where a folded letter appeared with a pop. “She needs you to take Lucien. Protect him, raise him how she wishes she could raise him.”

The Lady of Autumn looked at the window, and answered in a low, serious voice that Eris had to strain to hear. “He has doubts that the babe is his. He wants to see him first before making an announcement to the court.”
Eris gaped, eyes darting over to the nurse in the corner that was cooing over a babe swaddled in a red knitted blanket. “Why would he have doubts, mother? What are you suggesting to me?”
His mother didn’t look at him right away. She was still just gazing at the sunlight trying to break through the tiny window, eyes a million miles away. Her hesitation told Eris all he needed to know. But still, he asked. “Should he have doubts, mother?”
Eris knew that his mother raising this with him meant something. It meant there was truth to the doubt. He knew his mother well enough by now to know that she did everything for a reason. It was one of the only ways she and his father were alike: both were secretive, both were purposeful. Always.
A peek into some moments from Lucien's younger years in Autumn, from his birth to his exile. From the POV of Eris, as he watches his youngest brother survive in a cutthroat court that could never fully be his home.
