The nights have lost their terrors ever since Beth had first seen Mr. Shaibel play. With chess to occupy her mind and the board on the ceiling to watch over her, there was nothing to be scared of anymore - at least in those few sacred hours before going to sleep. No matter how dark the night, Beth would be protected.
