Mike presses his lips together, jaw tightening. "We didn't decide anything," he says. Then, after a beat, adds, "We just... grew apart a bit. That's all."
Lie.
Mike keeps lying over and over, like it's the only thing he knows how to do anymore. Seriously, if there were a challenge for liar of the year, he'd place first without even trying. Half the time, he's not even sure he remembers how to tell the truth anymore—or which version of it is supposed to be it.
"A bit?" Lucas scoffs. "Will doesn't even want to be near you, Mike."
ORMike and Will have been avoiding each other for months after Will told him he is gay.

The demogorgons elevate higher, their bones snap, and they fall to the ground dead. Will had managed to kill three demogorgons at once. He falls on his knees. Mike and Joyce both look at him in awe. Will feels blood dripping down from his eyes.
Mike runs to him, kneels down to his level, and hugs him. “You’re a sorcerer! A real-life, honest-to-God sorcerer! You did it! You really did it!”

Dustin balls his hands into fists and grits his teeth. “Fucking Wheeler!” he cries. “This is the quarry all over again!”

OR: Kali didn't die in the lab. She was only injured enough that she couldn't help fight against Henry. Before El left, she and Kali devised a new plan, one that El [begrudgingly] lets Mike in on just before they leave the Upside Down forever.
He'll be their distraction. It's the least he can do after all these years of her saving him. The rest of his friends have already stepped into their roles. He's long overdue.
Mike is their Paladin. He's going to protect his Party… even if it's to the bitter end.

Summary
Will and Mike visit New York in the year 1988. Mike has realised by now that he might have feelings for Will, but believes that Will is over him. They go out to a club after a day of roaming the city. As he watches how carefree Will dances, he feels conflicted: while he's glad that Will is finding himself, he feels regretful at the thought that Will doesn't need him anymore. While it seems like he is stuck in place, Will is moving on, overtaking him. But then again, while in New York, anything could happen.

"Every single little thing about Chigiri is perfect. He never thought he could have room in his life for another dream outside of becoming the top striker. But this? Kunigami would fall to his knees and pray to any God for this. To keep him, forever. He knows it's irrational. Chigiri probably doesn't even feel the same way. Not to mention them being in competition with each other. It's nice for the guys to think they will stay friends after this, but can you really stay friends with someone who steals your dream from you? Kunigami wants it to be him that wins. It has to be him. He feels guilt for wanting to take this from Chigiri. He's incredibly talented and deserves the world. He just can't have this. Kunigami would give himself, his body, anything to him, but not his dream."
