There are moments of clarity.
Moments where he feels like his body is his own, when he looks at his clenched fists and, for once, can feel his fingernails digging into his palms.
It seems, in all those moments, he’s knelt at the altar in that newly erected temple that looks so much like home. Knelt there, kowtowing until his forehead feels bruised and raw, and the only words that make it out of his mouth are Yuheng, and help me, pay attention to me, and I’m tired. But no god steps out of the shadows and comes to his side. No god comes to hold an umbrella over his head to shelter him from this storm.
He wants to say, “I’m cold, please hold me.” He’s really…so cold.
