Sometimes she’s in Berlin with her mother and her father is in New York and he’s a moving image on the screen of her phone, saying, remind Siobhan that the academy has attendance requirements and Len rolls her eyes and does no such thing. Sometimes her mother spends three weeks in a hotel two blocks away and Len eats dinner with her father at the long, dark dining table while the unused place setting stares at them. Sometimes they’re both gone, hating each other on opposite sides of the globe, Len caught in the middle of all that anger, the substance that brought her into the world. A touchstone. Kuvira and Baatar are both far too pragmatic to believe in such things.

Kuvira had been expecting at least twenty years, maybe thirty. To her dismay, Republic City's court sentences her to a life in prison. The idea of spending the rest of her days imprisoned is not exactly appealing, to put things lightly.
She doesn’t expect any visitors. She can’t think of a single person who would want to see her. For all intents and purposes, her life is over. But when she finds the Avatar standing outside her cell, she comes to realize that her new challenges are only just beginning.

Opal found the beach first, back before anyone but her had realized that she wasn’t a bender and was never going to be. She called it a beach, but really it was almost a cliff, jagged spurs of grey rock steeply sloping down to the crashing waves.
Baatar found her there, perched on the highest rock, curled up and staring out into the wind, the day everyone else realized that she wasn’t going to bend.
