Summary
No matter what Johnny does it’s all useless because his negative karma will never let him have anything, not even his summer vacation. His father insists on dragging him to England every summer which he dreads with a passion because it reminds him of his brother’s death. He’s painfully lonesome so he decides to try to befriend Diego Brando, a boy who left an impression on him the day of his brother’s death.
Focuses on the years 1881-1886 (Johnny ages 10-15 and Diego ages 11-16) and is told from both character’s POV.
