Not quite fear, no—more like dread. The filter served as a barrier. A veil that deprived her of genuine inflection. “Don't tell me you fashioned a rope out of…” Edging closer still, Alastor's spread fingers ghosted over the side of Charlie's head, claws just a breath away from catching on a strand. His voice lowered to a crackle of feedback. “Hair?”
Something shifted in Charlie's rib cage. What it was, she didn't know—but she felt the palpitation. She was close enough to smell him.

Charlie’s heart raced. She breathed heavily and her legs wobbled like a sickly fawn, but when her vision stopped spinning and the hotel appeared before her, she realized—she had done it! Wow, she had never managed to teleport that far before, let alone with a passenger in tow! She knew Alastor had made it the second she stepped out. His ambient static hummed softly in her ears, although it did sound a bit louder than usual.
And, all the furniture looked a bit shorter than she remembered…
Huh. That was weird.
An accidental bodyswap helps Charlie and Alastor discover their feelings for each other.
