    For three years, Beat can feel it resonating through the pact. He doesn't mind.

    Once he gets sucked back into the Game, it's a relief, really. It means he's one step closer to finding Neku.

    Joshua laughs, light like a bell over a shop’s door. Just like that gentle jingle, it sounds completely artificial. “Aren’t you the one who kept saying ‘trust your partner?’ Besides, you could stand to have some faith in your best friend,” he teases.

    Neku falls silent. Up ahead, Beat is explaining a skateboarding trick to a barely-comprehending Eri. “About that… you’ve- the memories I have of my friend, and the person you are now…” He plays with his bangs idly. “There are differences. And there’s still so much I don’t know about the Game. Maybe if you answer those questions, I’ll be more inclined to trust you.”

    (Or: Neku has more questions for Joshua, and Joshua... almost answers them.)

Sometimes he wonders if the real reason they hang out so much is simply because of proximity; after all, they do go to the same high school.

    But Fret's wrong. They share a lot more in common than that.
