Summary
After having discovered her powers in her teens, deserting the First Army, and spending several years as a pirate on Sturmhound's ship, Alina returns to Kribirsk. She's alone and wants to see Mal after quitting the crew. The Black General was getting too close to capturing her, and she figures laying low for a while is a good thing. While visiting her friend, she crosses the Fold to Novokribirsk where she learns of Grisha being sold and experimented on and then turned into living weapons. Wanting to intercede, she decides she needs to get ahold of Sturmhound again through a contact in Os Alta.
On the return trip through the Fold, they're attacked by volcra, leaving Alina with no choice but to reveal her powers. That means that she's effectively given up herself to the Darkling. He has plans for her, not realizing she herself has her own plans. Both of them seem to have a lot of secrets despite a deep attraction to each other. When Alina's life is threatened and she fears that she is the ultimate threat to her friends, she has to learn that even monsters can be loved.
