    Summary

While numerous studies have been conducted on the effects of captivity on other classes of vertebrates, very few studies have investigated the effects of captivity and its related stresses on amphibians. Chronic stress results in elevated levels of corticosterone (CORT) released from the adrenocortical cells, which in turn result in hyperglycemia, anorexia, and changes in behavior.

    Summary

“What?” Harry says, sputtering while he wipes the blood whisky from his mouth with a gag. “What?”

“You know what,” Lewis says, not bothering any attempt to hide the lisp of his voice. He’s not sure that Harry really does know, though; he knows that Harry’s probably seen Dracula, or Nosferatu, but he might also think that Lewis is just plain cracked.

“I knew there was a reason you never let me have any,” Harry says, kicking at the Vat69 bottle, as he wipes at his face and mouth with a dirty ball of gloves.

Lewis groans while shoving his head into his hands. He stares at the ground, waiting... and waiting, but Harry doesn’t do more than continue to make disgusted noises in front of him. “Why aren’t you off to get a pitchfork and mob?”

“Too tired, honestly,” Harry says, while throwing the gloves into the back of the foxhole. “I can’t run through the snow.”

So sweet and satisfying I could cry. Hoosier with a little sister as cute as Abby is something I didn’t know I needed but I absolutely do. 11/10

    Summary

Suddenly, and as clearly as if he read it in the histories in the Benning library, Ron envisions this strong, sad-faced man bleeding into grey French earth, and then gathered up, dead, by the enemy, bound for a mass grave. He wants to seize the sergeant’s hand and drag him away from Herbert Sobel’s company, make him impossible promises, swear on God that although he may die he will never be led foolishly and his life will not go to waste. Ron stands very still. He is a stranger to himself. He can’t remember ever wanting anything so much, except death.

Actually exquisite. The naked examination of a pain so acute and exact hits so hard. Reminds me of those small moments when I realized I wanted to keep living.
