“He may look like Steve, but that’s not Steve.” Distress mars her calm, professional mask, a sign of how shaken she is. “You saw how many men he killed, the way he did it. That’s not Steve.”
Bucky knows what she means. The man in the cell was merciless and ruthless, and he killed with such brutal grace that Bucky hadn’t been able to look away. But strip Steve of his higher ideals, and that’s how he’d fight; smart, efficient, lethal; leaving dead bodies in his wake, instead of just broken bones and contusions.
So the question is, what had Hydra done to Steve, and who did Bucky have to kill in recompense.

Steve hesitates in the doorway. Bucky must’ve heard the tail end of his conversation with Pepper. Now he looks tired, and resigned, and so done and Steve fucking hates that Bucky keeps getting dealt shit hand after shit hand. “I want to.” He hopes Bucky can hear the conviction in his voice. “I’m not losing you again.”
“But getting married? You think that’s gonna work?”

Summary
Bucky is seventeen when a skinny drummer with blond hair helps confirm something he has only suspected, the world rewriting itself while Bucky stands in the middle of a mosh pit in Ohio. After the show, Bucky can't bring himself to say anything. Or to interact with the band at all.
Seven years later, Steve Rogers barrels into Bucky's path, fists swinging. They are in Brooklyn, and there's a very slim likelihood that this is the same guy from all those years and miles ago.
Even so, Bucky can't just walk away.
(Featuring a meet ugly, scrappy no-serum Steve, just so many pairs of skinny jeans, and more mosh pits than you can shake a (drum)stick at.)
