    Serpents coiled in Lan Wangji's belly, his hands clutching at the earth as the pain sent him reeling, gasping for air that burnt his lungs. The pain was less, still, than the fear of raising their children alone, among the cold mountain streams of Cloud Recesses.

    He dipped his head at the shrine he'd built for Wei Ying, unmarked and away from his clan, offering unspoken promises to ears that could no longer hear.

    Safe. He would keep them safe, until Wei Ying returned. Until they could all be together, once again.
