“You once said you loved Chat Noir,” Adrien said, the words edged with something dangerously close to accusation. But the only change that crossed Marinette’s face was a softening of her expression as she looked at him with something that might almost have been pity.
“But I love you more, Adrien.” Her hands closed gently around Adrien’s fist, her palms soft and warm against the cold metal of the ring. This time, Adrien couldn’t even pull away. “Give up the ring, Adrien, and allow yourself to have this life.” Something flickered in Marinette’s eyes, a strange glimmer. Something Adrien couldn’t quite understand, something that did not belong there. “You have spent your entire life pretending to be what everyone else needed you to be anyway,” she whispered. “Why not do it one more time? For your own happiness this time.”
